This project was an approach to prefabricated and transportable architecture.
The temporary hospital is organized around a central line of access and hospital equipment. This spine leads us to the various functional units of the hospital, with the possibility of expansion according to the needs of program.
The project is based on a modular system of structural units. Each unit can be horizontally added to another ones in order to generate multiple spatial configurations of different scale according to the needs of program.
In Mozambique the temperatures usually varies from - 4 ° C to 46 ° C and it presents higher humidity in the coast area. The modules are grouped together forming spaces around patios or courtyards, which provide natural ventilation, lighting, and also work as natural temperature regulators, since they provide freshness to the rooms in the summer and preserve the heat in winter.
The space is configured through the separation (by a lifting mechanism) of the two octagonal parallel planes that form the floor and the roof of each structural unit.
Prefabricated elements are used in the construction process. All the elements are easy to assemble and disassemble. This allows the modification of the general space or the adaptation of the single modules to other functions.
The structure is supported by articulated rods with possibility of regulation of the height and inclination of the base, as required by the conditions of the terrain.
This generic adaptable architectural system is suitable for the various topographic and climatic situations that may occur in their African destination, like hilly terrain, Savannah, or the sandy soils of the coast and the Islands.
The building was thought to be built in Spain (or Europe in general), then stored in containers and transported to its final location.
The structure is initially compactly folded after his construction in order to be easily transported. The transported piece is formed by two matching planes that include in their intermediate space all the profiles and elements of the façade (also folded).
Once the piece is placed on its final destiny, the upper plane is lifted and all the elements are displayed till they achieve their correct position.
